This month in Central Texas may bring spring showers and warmer weather, but it’s also the time to plant many of the quintessential garden veggies we all hold so dear in our gardener hearts.

We’re officially past any threat of frost for the greater Austin area and have entered our first of two warm seasons for the year. That means it’s tomato time!

Beans, Black Eyed Peas, Crowder Peas, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplants, Malabar Spinach, Melons, Okra, Peppers, Summer Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Tomatillos (plant 2 plants for pollination), & Winter Squash

Herbs and Flowers

Basil, Calendula, Cora Vincas, Cosmos, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lemongrass, Marigolds, Oregano, Petunias, Rosemary, Sage, Sunflowers, Thyme, & Zinnias

Pro Tip:

Mexican mint marigold has beautiful yellow flowers and an anise-like aroma. We love using this herb to brew tea!

Tips for planting in April:

  • Add a good layer of compost before planting anything new.

  • Keep soil moist for proper seed germination.

  • Water new plants in well, and if your soil is extra dry, water the whole garden before planting.
